At a media event held today during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Samsung unveiled their latest lineup of smart devices, which includes the Gear 2, Gear Fit and, of course, the Galaxy S5.
Gear 2
Featuring a 1.0GHz dual-core processor and a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display (320×320 resolution), the Gear 2 is “designed to take the freedom, convenience and style of wearable technology to the next level.” The smartwatch can be paired with Samsung’s Galaxy line of phones to receive notifications, calls and more. The 300mAh battery is rated to last 2-3 days based off of typical usage, but up to 6 days with low usage.
As per Tom’s Guide, compared to the original Galaxy Gear, the Gear 2 is more dust and water resistant, uses Tizen OS instead of Android, records 1080p video instead of 720p, is slimmer and lighter, features a faster processor, acts as a remote for your TV, uses a heart rate sensor and pedometer, and plays music directly from its 4GB of internal storage.
The Gear 2 is expected to be available sometime in April. Pricing, unfortunately, is unknown at this time.
Gear Fit
The Gear Fit is a slimmed-down version of the Gear 2 for those who are more active, wanting something that’s not as large while exercising. It has a pedometer, heart rate/sleep/exercise/accelerometer/gyro sensors, a stopwatch, and a timer. Other features include a 210mAh battery (3-4 days for typical usage, 5 days for light usage), Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and a curved 1.84-inch Super AMOLED (432×128) display. The Gear Fit offers “unmatched convenience of Samsung Gear technology with the most comprehensive fitness tools available, empowering consumers stay physically active without sacrificing personal style or mobile connectivity.”
Like the Gear 2, expect the Gear Fit to be available sometime in April for a currently undisclosed amount of money.
Galaxy S5
Last up is the Galaxy S5, Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone. Its design isn’t much of a departure from last year’s Galaxy S4, but does offer some compelling changes but still may not be enough for existing S4 owners to upgrade. Samsung says that the S5 “offers consumers a refined experience with innovation of essential features for day-to-day use.”
Compared to the Galaxy S4, the S5 features a slightly larger display at 5.1-inches (1020×1920), a faster quad-core processor at 2.5GHz, Android 4.4.2 (KitKat), a 16MP rear-facing camera (2.0MP front-facing camera), 4K video recording at 30FPS, IP67 dust and water resistance, a 2800mAh battery, as well as a slightly different design, primarily with the perforated-designed back cover.
Pricing is unknown at this time, and will most likely vary by carrier, but should be available in over 150 countries starting sometime in April.
