In a recent research study conducted by UK’s ABIresearch, Apple’s iTunes App Store won against Google’s Play store in second, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace in third. According to the study, each mobile app storefront was ranked by two different dimensions: implementation and innovation. For implementation, Apple took the top spot based off of monetization, its large market share over its competitors, and the ability to receive hundreds of thousands of apps despite its tight control over what can be submitted.
On the other hand, Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace wins, narrowly, over Apple’s App Store, while Google Play ends up in last place. ABI was “impressed by Microsoft’s fresh approach to app discovery, as well as Windows Phone store’s overall solid usability.”
